Thomas Mores Utopia Essay Example
Thomas Mores Utopia Essay Example Thomas Mores Utopia Paper Thomas Mores Utopia Paper Essay Topic: Utopia Utopia Utopia, written by Sir Thomas More, is a description of a seemingly perfect society in contrast to a time and place where the wealthy were extravagant and the poor were worse than poor. England, during Moreââ¬â¢s time, (which was 1478 to 1535) was a place where the rich got richer and the poor got poorer. The Enclosure Movement that began to rise dramatically in the 1400s under Englandââ¬â¢s first Tudor king, Henry VII, had created an enormous gap between the wealthy and the poor. The vast majority of people were homeless and poverty stricken, because arable farming had decreased on huge amounts of traditional farm land and which was the only way of survival for the peasants. Vagabonds were imprisoned and thieves were hanged by the thousands. During the reign of Henry VIII, there were at least 72,000 thieves hanged (p. 15). The rich and powerful raised sheep, exported the wool for cash and became richer. In Utopia, More depicted a clear epitome of this time and, indirectly criticized Englandââ¬â¢s socioeconomical policies through a character created in the book, while reflecting his own humanistic beliefs concerning those policies. Moreââ¬â¢s, Utopia, or ââ¬Å"perfect society,â⬠is actually a creation of totalitarianism. However, totalitarianism, according to life in England during the Henry VIII reign, for the poor, would have been a much better life instead of one where politics, religion, and greed actually reduced the less fortunate to less than slaves. In Book I of Utopia, More described the consequences of the Enclosure Move-ment and Englandââ¬â¢s wars that created vagabonds and thieves. Speaking of the ââ¬Å"nobility, gentry and holy menâ⬠(p. 18), More wrote that these social classes not only lived in ââ¬Å"idleness and luxury while doing society no goodâ⬠(p. 18), but, they also directly injured the peasants by enclosing land for pasture, thus, destroying homes and towns (p. 18). Furthermore, because of landownersââ¬â¢ greed, the former workers of the land had no where to go and became idle and were ââ¬Å"jailed as idle vagrantsâ⬠(p. 19). This enclosing has led to sharply rising food prices in many districts . . . so great numbers are forced from work to idle-ness,â⬠wrote More. Vagrants were imprisoned, although, they were a creation of the rich and powerful, as were the soldiers who were disabled from Englandââ¬â¢s wars. Hunger stimulated thievery in the former farmers, as well as the disabled s oldiers who went back home to an England that did not support their soldiers after fighting her wars. More wrote, ââ¬Å"it would be much better to enable every man to earn his own living, instead of being driven to the awful necessity of stealing and then dying for itâ⬠(p. 16). However, in Utopia, as More wrote, no one was hungry and everybody worked. Slothfulness was not tolerated and there was a job for everyone and everyone had to work. Agriculture was the primary occupation for need and not greed and men, as well as, women worked on the farms. Outside of the farm work, everyone learned a trade. Everyone only worked six hours a day, but because everyone had to work, their working hours provided ââ¬Å"not only enough, but more than enough of the necessities and even conveniences of lifeâ⬠(p. 51). But, everyone was equal. There were no rich and poor and everyone all had the same food, clothing and housing. Private property did not exist. Utopians believed that human life was more valuable than owning material possessions. Practicality and reasoning are fundamentals that More used in his description of Utopian society. Political, religious and social structures are all practical and have a reasoning that are best beneficial to all Utopians. In the political aspect, Utopia was democratic. Any rules or laws made were for the exclusive welfare of all Utopians. Money did not exist and therefore those in government positions could not maintain or acquire power from financial superiority. Their constitutionââ¬â¢s main goal was that ââ¬Å"all citizens should be free to withdraw as much time as possible from the service of the body and devote themselves to the freedom and culture of the mind,â⬠and this is where they thought the ââ¬Å"happiness of lifeâ⬠existed (53). The Utopian religion that More depicted was tolerant. It was mandatory for the Utopians to accept three principles that included the belief that all human souls are immortal; humans are born for happiness by Godââ¬â¢s grace; and, after death, there will be punishments or rewards according to vice or virtue (p. 6). One of the Utopiansââ¬â¢ strictest rules was that no one should suffer concerning their religion and a person who fought about religion was deported or put into slavery (p. 94). Religion was based on reason and nature. ââ¬Å"Virtue,â⬠according to the Utopians, is defined ââ¬Å"as living according to nature, ââ¬Å" and ââ¬Å"when an individual obeys the dictates of r eason in choosing one thing and avoiding another, he is following nature (p. 67). The Utopians believed it especially commendable and virtuous to help other beings in a humanistic manner than to take joy in others miseries (p. 7). The Utopian society that Thomas More created was seemingly a perfect society as an alternative to his sixteenth century world in England. Whether by nature or nurture that the Utopians would have become accustomed to the ââ¬Å"totalitarianâ⬠ways of life, giving up their freedom for a guaranteed full stomach, a home and a life where pride and greed had no place to develop, would have been far better than the miseries of the homeless and poverty stricken in Moreââ¬â¢s real world. Moreââ¬â¢s world, where politics and religion, intertwined with ambition and power, stimulated wealthy nobles and aristocracy no matter the miseries of those they used to acquire their wealth and power. Power, such as that sought by Henry VIII in his Act of Supremacy that More refused to agree to and cost him his head. Before his beheading, Sir Thomas More did create in his Utopia, a practical and reasonable society. A perfect one is questionable. On one hand a communistic structure guaranteed that the Utopians would all be fed and have their needs, although, everyone was forced to work and would never acquire more than any other for their hard work. On the other hand, because education, religion, morals, private life and even pleasure was all controlled by the Utopian governing officials, the practical and reasonable society was a totalitarian society. The poor and miserable of England in the sixteenth century would probably have been better off in the Utopian world, although liberty was absent from the ââ¬Å"perfectâ⬠society. I have read my paper and I did not cheat.

Why wait? Seize Snickersâ⬠(Sunshine 2013). These ads of Snickers seize the audienceââ¬â¢s concentration through the use of: background, intellectual illustrations, and color subjects. In the November 2012 theme of Rolling Stone, Snickers permits readers to vigorously engage in their comedic ad, the advertisement first seizes the readerââ¬â¢s concentration by situating ââ¬Å"You are not you when you are ravenousâ⬠as well as the utterances ââ¬Å"Satisfiesâ⬠wrong way up at the top hub of the page (Sunshine 2013). Right away I thought about the clout of food, exclusively the clout of chocolaty sweets. I then came to recognize that the circumstance sufficed as a support system to primarily let readerââ¬â¢s be acquainted with that the manufactured goods is worth the buy and will abscond them satisfied (Wilson 2012). Next, I observed the hub of the advertisement where I adage the visage of a man (Sunshine 2013). The manââ¬â¢s temper in the advertisement can be illustrated as gloomy because of the grimace he displays. In addition, the depiction also shows a delightful man with a Snicker under his visage along with the expression ââ¬Å"Satisfiesâ⬠(Wilson 2012). This man demonstrates the two in one association between a purchaser who has had a Snickers and a purchaser who has not had a Snickers (Sunshine 2013). The design allows the person who reads to presume that a solitary person has two diverse egos: happy and upset. I came to be familiar with a constant theme; Snickers want clients to know that you turn out to be a diverse person within yourself devoid of the immense ta ng of a Snicker (Wilson 2012). Who is the advert targeted at? Snickers Ad expressions campaign targets foragers so famished they cannot hex (Mercides 2013). Targeting misspelled key expressions has long been a line of attack in search engine optimization and referrals or pay-per-click marketing in order to incarcerate traffic that while it valor not have as numerous impressions, it can be over and over again cheaper than the suitably spelled term or easier to position for the phrase (Mercides 2013). However, Snickers has taken this stratagem to a whole innovative level, not only targeting misspelled keywords, but as well as using their ad duplicate to play on the verity that the entity misspelled what he or she was incisive for (Christo 2012). The ad is always targeting any internet user and any other working civilian (Mercides 2013). It may also target the television fans and sports viewers, snickers is one of the promoting beneficiaries in the sporting grounds (Mercides 2013). Wha t bland and services are been offered? Snickers provides certain varieties and bland such as snickers dark chocolate this entails of an extra measure of cocoa thus providing or explaining it is dark appearance (Lukas 2012, p. 123). The study will also look into the implemented measures to alleviate such challenges and their suitability. While critically examining the available research on challenges that social networking poses to the youth, these studies prove to be inadequate. For instance, most studies took place before the introduction of the numerous diverse social networking sites that provide a different platform for association (Fuchs, 2012). This results from the fact that the advancement of technology creates various platforms of social networking, thereby posing new challenges. Additionally, numerous researches on the perils of social networking failed to address the issue of mitigation measures and suitable processes of

Analysing Result Graphs Essay Example for Free
Analysing Result Graphs Essay This graph shows the range of ages of the people that I surveyed. The majority was split evenly between the 30 40 age group and the 40 50 age group. I asked for this information so I could find out what age group I should target my business at in terms of style atmosphere and advertising to attract the most possible customers. Now I know who my target audience is I can advertise well to attract customers of that age and set an atmosphere and style to suit that age group. This pie chart shows the average amount of times that the person surveyed goes on every year. This information is vital as it is an indicator as to whether the business will have many customers throughout the year. If the chart were to show that people didnt go on many holidays then there would be no point in the business but as the chart shows the majority of people go on at least 2 holidays on average every year indicating the business will be successful. This doughnut chart shows where the ideal location for Cherry Kennels would be for the majority of the people surveyed. This is crucial to get right because it needs to be located where the public find it most convenient and also were business will be more successful from being close to a lot of potential customers. As clearly shown in the chart, the preferred location for Cherry Kennels would be somewhere situated in Brentwood. Therefore this is where I shall set up Cherry Kennels once I have found a suitable place in Brentwood. This bar chart represents how much the people surveyed are willing to pay per night of their cat/dog staying at Cherry Kennels. It is important to get the pricing correct because it needs to be cheap enough to keep the customers happy and attract more customers, but it needs to be expensive enough to make a decent profit. Thats why I asked this question, to see what the majority of people thought was a fair price. The majority of people believe that à ¯Ã ¿Ã ½30 à ¯Ã ¿Ã ½35 is a fair price per night and I see this to be reasonable and enough to make a profit so therefore this is how it shall be priced. This final graph shows how much the people surveyed are willing to pay to have their dog/cat professionally groomed. I asked this question to find out whether there is any point in having the additional grooming parlours if no-one would use it but not only did the majority of people say they would use it but they also chose a reasonable price again to suit them as customers and me looking to make a profit. As the graph shows the majority of people chose à ¯Ã ¿Ã ½20 à ¯Ã ¿Ã ½25 so therefore this is how it shall be priced. Competitors My main local competitor is Ladybird Kennels located in Ingatestone. This is because they to provide boarding kennels for both cats and dogs. Ladybird Kennels aim to provide their guests with an excellent standard of service and care based on over 10 years of experience. As quoted in their Ladybird brochure.à Ladybird kennels is not in a very busy area but is opposite an entrance to a very busy motorway so a lot of people are constantly driving past, this isnt too much of a problem because the front building/reception area is not that appealing from the outside. By locating Cherry Kennels in a busy place such as Brentwood I hope to gain more customers as it is more conveniently placed than having to go out of your way to get to Ladybird Kennels. Cherry Kennels will provide very similar services as Ladybird Kennels apart from the fact that Cherry Kennels will provide the additional professional grooming parlors. Another difference is that Cherry Kennels will be able to hold and take care of a considerable amount of more cats and dogs. Finally Ladybird Kennels has a Discount food shop which is not planned for Cherry Kennels but could be considered.à Ladybird Kennels is very old fashioned and has been around for ten years so the target audience for its services will probably be the same as Cherry Kennels between 30 50 years of age. This is not a problem however as Cherry Kennels will be more modern to suit this age group and up and coming generations so business will continue well.

Space and Power: An Analysis of the DC Riots :: Free Essays Online
Space and Power: An Analysis of the DC Riots Federal Communications Commissioner Nicholas Johnson has stated, "A riot is somebody talking. A riot is a man crying out, ââ¬ËListen to me mister. There is something Iââ¬â¢ve been trying to tell you and youââ¬â¢re not listening.ââ¬â¢" (Gilbert ix). During the 1960s the Civil Rights Movement made a transition from an allegiance to the ideology of nonviolence to one of black power and self-defense. After the death of Martin Luther King Jr., waves of disorder spread through the African American sections of more than 120 cities across the nation; however, the heaviest damage was done in the nationââ¬â¢s capitol of Washington D.C. (Gilbert 15-16). I am arguing that the cause of the riots was white people who antagonized and aggravated African Americans to an unbearable point. African Americans turned to militancy in hopes that it would bring some attention to the problems they were facing. During this time period, radical militant black power leaders also traveled to Africa and other third world countries to call for revolutions. The conditions of the cities where many of the uprisings occurred were deteriorating. Research has shown that blacks faced discrimination in employment, education, housing, and in matters dealing with the police. According to Joseph R. Brandt, a black minister during the 1960s, "In nearly every way, the gap between black people and whites has widened, rather than narrowed" (Barndt 17). An article published in 1969 in the Washington Post stated, "Today the Negro wage earner makes 53 percent of his white brotherââ¬â¢s salary, while in 1953, the figures were 59 percent." The African Americans of Washington, D.C. did not only making very little progress, they had actually gone backwards. Black people compromised more than one-half of the population of Washington, D.C. but they had less than one-eighth of the top jobs in the city ("Are D.C."). Compared to a white person, an African-American had only a one-forth chance of getting a job (Boesel 312). In 1969, employees of the General Services Administration charged their employer with systematic racial discrimination in its staffing, promotion and training practices (Honsa). Segregation could also be found in real estate and housing. The refusal of many institutions to grant a housing mortgage loan to black people was a definite factor in keeping some of the areas of the city segregated (Asher, F10). In 1964 complaints were filed against ten Washington real estate firms that showed different lists of available apartments to blacks than they did to whites ("Core").

Afro-Caribbean Poetry Essay
In this essay I will be studying the various items of poetry from manyAfro-Caribbean poets. One of the poets is Langston Hughes who wasà born in Joplin, Missouri on the first of February 1902. He startedà writing poetry after moving to Lincoln, Illinois. The poems I will beà studying are ââ¬Å"Mulattoâ⬠and ââ¬Å"I, Tooâ⬠.à The next poet I will be looking at is Grace Nichols. Nichols was bornà in Guyana in 1950, she came to England in 1977 this is when sheà developed her fiction and verse writing. The poem I will be studying isà ââ¬Å"Praise song for my motherâ⬠. The next poet I will look at will be Dr Benjamin Obadiah lqualà Zephaniah, he was born in Birmingham, but he spent most of hisà time in Jamaica. After he spent some time in prison he decided to useà his energy for good and educate himself. The poem I will study ââ¬Å"I loveà me mudderâ⬠.à The last poet work I will be looking at will be John Agard. Agard wasà born in Guyana in 1949, the country was still a British colony untilà 1966. In 1977 Agard moved to England. This is where he became theà light of the new West Indian British dawn of various bardicà compositions. Agard is a poet whom blends calypso styled languageà with unique sounding spoken word. The work I will be studying isà ââ¬Å"Half-casteâ⬠à I have paired the poems up. The pairs either share the same topic,à tone or language. One of the pairs is ââ¬Å"Half-casteâ⬠by John Agard andà ââ¬Å"Mulattoâ⬠by Langston Hughes, because they have the same type ofà topic and also tone.à ââ¬Å"Half casteâ⬠is about weather: the term half-caste can be applied toà any thing else apart from people. John Agard has written a very goodà poem witch makes you think about the words we use every day withà out knowing the proper meanings and whether it makes any senseà when you break the word down. I think that many words we use nowà are ââ¬Å"out of dateâ⬠and should be changed for politically correct termsà and alternatives. Agard also uses some stunning references to get youà thinking. The other half of this pair ââ¬Å"Mulattoâ⬠tells us about the harshà treatment black women faced at the hands of their white bosses inà the slave era and how the women were only used as play things, thisà is shown in the part ââ¬Å"Whatââ¬â¢s a body but a toy?â⬠. The word ââ¬Å"mulattoâ⬠à means the same as ââ¬Å"half casteâ⬠but not as many people use ità nowadays. The boy in the story has a trouble fitting in with blackà people and white people and does not have that sense of belonging ifà he had been born to parents of the same race. The next pair is ââ¬Å"Praise song for my motherâ⬠by Grace Nichols and ââ¬Å"Ià love me mudderâ⬠by Benjamin Zephaniah. Iââ¬â¢ve paired these poemsà because they share the same topics which is their mothers.à ââ¬Å"Praise song for my motherâ⬠is about how Grace Nichols loved herà mother and how she inspired to do the best she could. Itââ¬â¢s also howà she looked up to her, and how her mother was all the things she likesà such as the sunrise and the fried plantain smell. The poem is set in aà past tense which seems to tell us the readers that her mother hasà died. The second half of my pair is ââ¬Å"I love me mudderâ⬠. This poem is aboutà how Benjamin Zephaniahââ¬â¢s mother came from Jamaica on a boatà called Windrush. Many people came from Jamaica because theyà thought they would have a better life than the one they all ready had.à In black family family (need to delete this) life the figure of theà mother is very strong and is the main rule maker in the house, andà this poem shows how she works so hard just to make sure her familydonââ¬â¢t go without. The last pair of poems is ââ¬Å"taintâ⬠by Grace Nichols and ââ¬Å"I, Tooâ⬠byà Langston Hughes these two poems have been joined together becauseà they both have kind of the same topic which shows the pain blackà people have overcome but still yet we are strong.à ââ¬Å"taintâ⬠is about the treachery that this person has had cast uponà them while they where a slave, the fact that they where stolen by menà the colour of their own skin. This reminds me of the black on blackà gang warfare and killings. This person who trusted the people of theirà same skin colour was betrayed. This work also shows how theseà people where traded like they where animals. The poem has aà message to everyone: to stop fighting and live peacefully together.à The second half of the pair is ââ¬Å"I, Tooâ⬠which shows how black peopleà had to eat in a kitchen when company came but they ate well andà became strong. So when company comes no one will dare tell me toà eat in the kitchen and now you are ashamed about what you did toà me when I was mentally weak. This poem has a promise of hope forà à change. Hughes suggests that ââ¬Å"Tomorrowâ⬠things will be different andà people will see that beauty and equality of all peoples.

Steve Jobs The Man Who Thought - 1616 Words
Known as the man who thought ââ¬Å"different,â⬠Steve Jobs was a very passionate entrepreneur, innovator, and leader who did not give up on his dreams. He was very dedicated to his work, and a self-made billionaire, but his story doesnââ¬â¢t start there. In 1994, a young college woman by the name of Joanne Schieble became pregnant. The father of her child was Syrian, so Joanneââ¬â¢s father did not agree with them being married. During this time it was also frowned upon to be a single mother, so Joanne proceeded to move from Wisconsin to San Francisco. She had met a couple of lawyers who had agreed to adopt the child, but after the baby was born on February 24, 1955, they decided not to. Soon after, a young couple just out of high school had been wanting a baby, so when they heard that there was a new born available they rushed over adopt him. Everything seemed to be going smoothly until Joanne discovered that they had not gone to college. She wanted to give her child th e best opportunity possible; she wanted college graduates to raise him. After months of thinking, she finally agreed that they were the best fit for him, they also promised that since they had not gone to college that they would make sure he did. They named him Steven Paul Jobs. Jobs was raised in Silicon Valley and liked to spend most of his time alone or in his garage with his father.
